Sustainable by Design: What the Events Industry Must Do Next

Why Sustainability Can’t Be an Afterthought in the Event Industry

We’ve all been to events that looked incredible—but left behind a pile of waste, printed brochures no one took home, and branding that ended up in the bin the next day.

At Trescon, we believe the future of events can’t just be about scale. It has to be about responsibility.

Sustainability isn’t a checkbox. It’s a lens through which we now view every decision—every venue, every supplier, every badge, every experience we design. Because events that move the world forward shouldn’t be hurting the planet in the process.

It Starts With Small Changes

We asked ourselves a simple question: What if we designed events to generate less waste by default?

So we got to work.

  • No single-use plastic—across all venues
  • Biodegradable materials for all badges and lanyards
  • Reusable signage and branding assets that travel across editions

These aren’t just eco-friendly choices—they’re intentional design decisions. And when done consistently, they add up.

Local First, Always

We partner with vendors and service providers who understand that sustainability isn’t a trend—it’s a shared commitment.

Whether that’s using digital check-ins to avoid paper or sourcing materials locally to reduce transport emissions, we build with the belief that every event has a ripple effect on its ecosystem.

From Action to Accountability

We’re also moving beyond good intentions by making our efforts measurable.
Across events, we track:

  • Waste diverted from landfills
  • Materials reused across editions
  • Reduction in plastic and paper
  • Carbon offsets and emissions data

This transparency helps us improve, and it gives our sponsors, partners, and attendees visibility into the footprint of the events they support.

CARE: Putting Sustainability on Centre Stage

To go even further, we launched the CARE Series—our flagship platform for sustainability and inclusive development across the Global South.

CARE brings together business leaders, governments, technologists, and civil society to collaborate across eight key pillars of sustainability—from water and energy to food systems, education, and climate finance.

But here’s what makes CARE different:
It doesn’t just talk about sustainability—it runs sustainably.

Paperless check-ins, carbon tracking, plastic-free zones, hyperlocal sourcing, biodegradable everything. Because how we run the event is part of the message.

Inviting the Whole Community to Lead With Us

This isn’t just Trescon’s story. It’s a collective movement.
We actively invite everyone—from attendees to exhibitors—to be part of the shift:

  • Use digital badges
  • Bring reusable water bottles
  • Support green-certified sponsors
  • Share feedback on how we can improve

Sustainability is a shared effort, and we believe that even small shifts in behaviour—when scaled—can drive real change.

Progress Over Perfection

Are we perfect? Not yet.
Are we committed to doing better, event by event, choice by choice? Absolutely.

We’re embedding sustainability into every format we run—whether it’s World AI Show, Dubai FinTech Summit, HODL, or CARE—because we believe the future of events must be as responsible as they are remarkable.

Let’s keep raising the bar together.

I would love to hear how you’re approaching sustainability in your events or organisations – let’s connect if you’d like to exchange ideas.

Sustainability Needs a Reality Check

The world talks a big game about net zero emissions. Pledges are made. Deadlines are set. But here’s the truth:

Carbon emissions? Still rising.
Greenwashing? More common than real
